The Wall of Sound record company played an integral role shaping Banksy’s career.

The London-based music label, run by Mark Jones, provided the artist with steady work creating album covers, allowing him direct access with musicians and giving Banksy a large West London studio space where he could practice his art and relax, away from police officers when they pursued him for vandalizing public spaces.

Music and Banksy have been intertwined for many years. From the 1980s, Banksy was involved in the street art scene in Bristol and even back then, was majorly influenced by dance music creators The Wild Bunch, as well as 3D, Robert Del Naja, from music band Massive Attack. It was in 1993 that Banksy first worked on a music cover, creating the inlay card for a pair of cassette albums for Bristol band Mother Samosa.

Wall of Sound released ‘10 Years of Wall of Sound’ on the 13th of September 2003.

The unusual thing about this album cover is that it was not designed by Banksy, but rather, features him on it – from behind. He is showcased, pictured from the back of the head, spraying away on the far-right side of the cover – in plain view, yet, not so.

He shares the gatefold cover with other significant contributors to Wall of Sound over the years including Fiona Jones, the partner of owner Mark, and artists including band members from Royksopp, Zoot Woman and Blak Twang.
