English Maid
2006
Print on Aluminium
"The English Maid" depicts a maid sweeping dirt under a brick wall. The artwork represents the reluctance of the Western world to confront global issues like poverty - a topic close to Banksy's heart. Unlike many of his pieces, Banksy provided background context for this one: "In the bad old days, it was only popes and princes who had the money to pay for their portraits to be painted, this is a portrait of a maid called Leanne who cleaned my room in a Los Angeles motel. She was quite a feisty lady."
Painted in 2006 on Chalk Farm Road in North London.
